So, you’ve decided to look into solar panels and batteries for your property — great move. But almost immediately, you find yourself knee-deep in calls, quotes, and offers from every direction. One minute you’re browsing Google, the next you’re being offered a “limited-time deal” or “exclusive discount.” Sound familiar?

This blog is here to help you step back, take a breath, and get clear on what the sales and survey process should really look like — and how to spot the difference between helpful and pushy.

Let’s start with this: we’re not here to bash anyone

Let me be clear — this isn’t a bash on solar companies. There are many honest and hardworking firms out there doing good work. But the reality is, for a lot of solar companies, the primary goal is sales. And that’s not always the same as what’s best for you.

We want to help you keep the focus where it belongs — on your needs, your home, and your long-term savings.

Top tips before you say yes to any quote

Here are some tips I always give when someone asks for help navigating this part of the process:

Always get more than one quote

You wouldn’t buy a car without shopping around, so don’t treat your solar installation any differently. Prices, equipment, and warranties can vary massively.

Push for at least one on-site survey

Ideally, someone should visit your property. But realistically, smaller companies often can’t afford the time or staff to do this. Larger companies sometimes will — but be aware that the person visiting may be commission-based and focused on closing the sale.

Ask about shading

This is key. If you’ve got trees, chimneys, or anything else casting shadows over your roof, it affects your solar gain. The installer should always factor that into your system design and quote.

Understand your usage vs your potential savings

You need more than “you’ll save money.” You want real numbers. How much electricity will your system generate annually? How does that compare to your current usage and costs?

Battery details matter.

Make sure they explain what size battery you’re getting, what brand, and what the warranty is. Not all batteries are equal, and this is a big part of your setup.

Check warranties – all of them.

You want to know:

  • Panel warranty (typically 25 years)
  • Inverter warranty (usually 5–10 years)
  • Battery warranty (can vary a lot)
  • Installation warranty – often overlooked, but crucial.

So, what do you do with all this?

You don’t need to become a solar expert overnight. But you do want to stay in control.

That’s where we come in. At Solar Advice Bureau, we don’t install panels or sell equipment — we’re independent. That means our job is simple: to help you make the best decision for you.

If you’ve already had a quote, or are about to, we can help you verify it. We’ll look over what’s been offered and help you ask the right questions — before you commit.
